NCSU Blueberry Varieties

North Carolina State University has a rich history in blueberry variety development, starting in the 1930s through cooperative efforts with the USDA.

In the 1970s, the emergence of stem blight, caused by Botyosphaeria dothidea, and the introduction of "southern highbush" varieties reshaped the program. Varieties like O’Neal and Reveille became pivotal, with a focus on superior fruit quality and mechanical harvest.

Southern Highbush

Southern Highbush blueberries are unique. They’re expertly crafted for superior fruit quality, soil adaptability, heat resistance, and minimal winter chilling requirements.

These blueberries, with dark blue-green foliage and attractive pink or white blooms, are more than just fruitful. They’re a delightful addition to edible landscapes.

Rabbiteye

Rabbiteye blueberries are prized for their delicious flavor and ease of cultivation, particularly in the southern regions of the United States. These blueberries are native to the Southeast and are characterized by their tolerance to heat and drought, making them well-suited for the Southern climate.

Ornamental

Ornamental blueberries offer a unique blend of beauty and utility to gardeners and homeowners. These specially selected blueberry cultivars not only provide visually appealing foliage, blooms, and fruit but also serve as a sustainable and low-maintenance addition to edible landscapes.

Pentaploid

Pentaploid blueberries are a result of crossing a tetraploid (4 sets of chromosomes) blueberry with a hexaploid (6 sets) blueberry, resulting in a plant with 5 sets of chromosomes.
